Young People's Allotment wins award!

The Y-Volunteers young people's allotment wins award at Southwark's In Bloom awards...

Since March 2009, the y-volunteer team along with volunteers - have been taking special care of three large raised beds in the Southwark Park Youth Allotment.

At first, young people in the y-volunteer Steering Group were not convinced that any young people would attend the gardening sessions at the allotment, but over the last few months a group of 5 young people have taken part in the gardening sessions led by y-volunteer.

Everything is organic and eco-friendly to encourage everyone to be healthier and more environmentally aware. Tomatoes, broad beans, potatoes, leeks, carrots, red peppers, cabbage, ‘bee-friendly’ flowers and a citrus tree are amongst what’s been planted and so far, spring onions, swiss chard and radishes have been harvested. The Youth Allotment space is shared between y-volunteer Southwark, Southwark Young Friends of the Park, Bede Centre and Community Space Challenge.

This year it was nominated for a Southwark In Bloom Award for Best Allotment Site - And the 'Young People's Allotment' won the silver award! So Congratulations to everone who has helped make the allotment what it is!
