Kelly says y-volunteer
Some of Southwark's finest young talent recently auditioned to perform at the y-volunteer launch party. Tashecka was there at the auditions and tells us about her brush with fame...
On March 20 2008 the y-volunteer auditions for the launch party (on April 4) were held at the Husky studios on Walworth Road.
Kelly Rowland from Destiny’s Child was in the Husky Studios at the same time as us so we took the opportunity to tell her about the event and photograph her holding one of the invites.
Top performances
The audition itself went very well despite the bad weather with the young performers turned up to the audition and gave us their best performance. There were singers and MCs. The performers chose to sing/rap songs that they had written, were inspired by or meant something positive.
Each person was asked to perform a second song in case there is time on the night. The judging panel didn't give any critical feedback because each person had done their best on his or her song. They were blown away by the talent and performances. This gave the panel plenty of choice for who they would choose to perform at the launch party.
The judging panel were Ali Amer, Tashecka Francis, Michelle Devall and Christopher Waweru. At the registration point were some of the colleagues who had helped people auditioning with the artist information sheets I created. They were: Kate Westall from y-volunteer, Laura Zauli and Sarah Timpson from the council's youth service.
