Young Friends of Parks

You don’t have to go far to get to the great outdoors in Southwark. Join Young Friends of Southwark Parks and help you make your local park a better place for children and young people.

Three of Southwark's parks have Young Friends of Parks (YFP) groups

  • Southwark Park has a group for eight to 12 year olds and one for 13 to 19 year olds

  • Burgess Park (for eight to 14 year olds)

  • Peckham Rye Park (for eight to 14 year olds)

YFP activities

The YFP members work very hard to help make their park a more fun place for other children and young people. The young people also get to go on free residential holidays and trips. So far the members have been

  • Fundraising to get a splash pool in Peckham Rye Park

  • Campaigning for a new playground in Burgess Park

  • Applying to Cleaner Greener Safer for community gardening plots in Southwark Park

  • Working with Groundwork Southwark as young consultants on the play needs of Burgess Park

  • Running a London wide music event in Southwark Park for young people

Some of our achievements

  • Applied for and received £5,000 to hold an awareness raising day to gain local support in rebuilding the playground in Burgess Park

  • Helped to raise £666,000 to redevelop Chumleigh Gardens and build a new playground at Chumleigh through raising the profile of the existing playground

  • Received £600 to hold a summer party and create a ‘mini-beast’ play area in Peckham Rye Park

  • Applied for and won £1000 to research water play areas for Peckham Rye Park

  • Designed, created and now maintain a sensory garden and a 'mini-beast' city in Southwark Park

  • Raised £7,000 to host a children and family fun day, called Park It!, around the bandstand in Southwark Park, with local young people providing the musical entertainment.

  • Successfully applied for £6,000 to run a health promotion day in Southwark Park for young people, with free activities such as kickboxing, yoga, bhangra dance and healthy food.
