Fast forward

Jamie, Michael, Kishawn, Terry, Princess and Reece are members of the youth forum for Fast Forward, a borough-wide project for young adults with learning difficulties and disabilities.

They represent Southwark’s young people with LDD and meet once a month in Peckham to plan events, residentials and ways to raise money for funding. Last year the group applied to the Youth Opportunity Fund and were successful in their applications to continue the Youth Forum for another year. It's during these monthly forum sessions that the group discusses issues relevant to themselves and the wider group of young people they represent.

“We’re all different people with different needs. We want people to understand about our special needs.”

All the hours that these six spend during Youth Forum sessions at Fast Forward go towards their Y-Volunteer certificates and between them they’ve racked up hundreds of hours.

One of this year’s themes for Fast Forward's Youth Forum is bullying and earlier this year the group produced 'Give The Bullies Some Help', a song made in association with national organisation www.beatbullying.org and in line with Fast Forward's anti-bullying policy.

Music is something all the members enjoy. For them, like most other young people, music is a big part of their lives. Between them the members like classical music, rap, hip hop, pop and reggae.

“We want to put information on the internet so that people can find out more about what our members need. We need more activities. We need more awareness so people can understand our disabilities.”
