It has the power to transform your mood from bad to better. Humans consume different forms of sweets such as milk sweets, chocolates, cookies, jellies, tarts and ice creams etc. Out of this, chocolates are one of the most loved sweet that are eaten all over the world. These light and dark colored sweet food items are obtained from cocoa beans and are mixed with substances, such that they form bars that everybody relishes.

Apart from humans, the pets that they keep are also great lovers of chocolates. If your dog finds a bar of chocolate, he would devour it to the last morsel. But a highly genuine fact that most of the pet-keepers do not know is that chocolates are bars of poison for your pets. Especially if your dog loves the sugary flavor of the chocolates, you got to be cautious of the matter.

Chocolates could do a whole lot of damage to the body of the pets. These extracts from the cocoa seeds contains caffeine which is a highly toxic material. When ingested by a pet, it could cause various diseases and disorders such as Diarrhea, Vomiting, rise in the body temperatures and fevers, increase in the rigidity of muscles, increased rate of breath, enhanced heartbeat and seizures, high and low blood pressures or fatal symptoms such as cardiac arrests, coma or weakness may occur. When you view the list of all these items, there must be certain questions that arise from your heart regarding the chocolates. Here we have tried to clear some of the queries that pop out regarding the chocolates.

What are the types of chocolates available?

Chocolates may occur in a variety of shapes, sizes and states. They also occur under a hoard of brand names. But if you talk about the categories, they are mostly grouped under three heads:

Milk Chocolates:

These are the combination of milk and cocoa beans in association of other additives such as sugars and flavors etc. These are mostly consumed by kids. When your dog accidently eats about 20 grams of chocolates in accordance to a kilogram of its body weight, there could be mild symptoms of toxicity but when the consumption increases to about 50 grams, there could be severe complications in the body of dogs.

Semi-Sweet Chocolates:

These chocolates are also combined with additives such as sugars and fruits but to a limited extent, such that you get the complete taste of original cocoa. When a dog eats about 8 gm of this chocolate per kilogram of its body weight, it could experience light symptoms of poisoning in its body but when the consumption increases to about 25 grams, the dog could be highly intoxicated with the material as these chocolates contain relatively higher percentage of cocoa.

Baking Chocolates:

These are the purest form of chocolates that do not contain any artificial substance or additive blended. These chocolates contain a high quantity of caffeine and theobromine which if ingested even 5 grams by the dog, could be highly fatal and disastrous to its health.

How much chocolate could be given if the dog loves it?

As a matter of fact, chocolates are toxic for your dog even in a negligible content, as the body of a dog is not suitable to digest sweet items. These could cause a hoard of diseases in them. Therefore it is better not to give them chocolates.

If your pet is highly loving the material, you should go for the lesser caffeinated ones such as milk chocolates etc. that contain a lesser amount of toxicity. If you have a medium sized dog that weighs 20 to 25 kgs, you could offer it about 200 grams of milk chocolate. Be cautious of not increasing the content or else it may lay havoc on its body.

What are the signals that show chocolate poisoning?

This could depend on the amount and the type of chocolate consumed by your pet. Some of the common disorders that occur in almost every dog are Diarrhea, Vomiting, increased heartbeat, increased thirst, panting, high amount of urine discharge, anxiety, restlessness, muscle spasm and seizures.  If your dog is an old one and he consumes baking chocolates, chances are there that he may encounter a sudden heart-attack and go to coma. If he is having a preexisting heart disease, the chances would not favor him a bit. Others may encounter breathing and respiratory problems in association with the common signals.

In such a case when you are not sure of what has happened, care for meeting a vet as soon as possible as the signals take a few hours to capture the organs but may last long for a considerable days. The theobromine content in the chocolates could get absorbed in the kidneys and bladder and could be recirculated in the body. To prevent this, immediate medical attention is utterly essential. The pet should be offered IV fluids so that the condition remains stable.

What if a pet accidently eats the chocolate?

The dogs may eat any stray item which they find suitable and this could include chocolates too. If you have seen it eating a dropped chocolate or are in doubt that it might have eaten a chocolate, rush to the vet immediately. The theobromine takes time to show signs and you should not wait for them to develop. The vet would check for the conditions that occur at the stage. If required, he may provide medications to vomit out the ingested item.

The sooner the toxic materials are removed off the body of pet, the lesser would be its effect on the organs and the faster would your dog take to cope up the complications.

What are the primary and secondary treatments offered to the pets while they eat chocolates?

While a dog eats the chocolate and you are absolutely sure of it, dash to the vet as soon as possible. If the dog has taken time and developed the signals well, the vet would offer it all the treatments that remove the toxic elements out of your body.

As a primary treatment, the vet would offer it medicines such as activated charcoals etc that would absorb the toxic materials from its stomach. It would also be offered medicines that enhance vomit of the ingested materials.

When there are clear signals such as vomiting and diarrhea, it may be provided with intravenous fluids that dilute the toxins and help them to get out of the body through excretion. Other medicines which slow down the heartbeat and control the anxiety may also be given. When the dog is not well, it should rest as much as possible.

What are the substitutes for the chocolates?

When you look for substances that you could substitute the chocolates for your pets, carob is the substance that could accomplish the task. Many companies prepare eatables for the pets that are made out of carob. This material is similar to the chocolates and has the same taste. Moreover, it contains a lesser amount of theobromine, the substance that is wholeheartedly responsible for doing the worst in the body of pets. Therefore, if your pet cannot resist tasting sweet food items, you could get to use desserts that are made up of carob. It would serve your purpose of a sweet food item and would do no harm to the body of pets.

These are some of the complications that arise when your pet eats a substance that it is not supposed to do. Chocolates and other sweets are great foes to your pets and accompany a variety of cons in the body.

You would definitely not love the notion of rushing with your pet to hospital, every time it consumes sweet items such as toxic chocolates. Therefore, it is suggested that you should be utterly careful of where your pet goes and what does it eat. At home too, it could find a hoard of hazardous materials that despite of relishing its taste buds, would harm it utterly. If you have small kids at home who love eating chocolates, chances are there that they may drop some of their eatables and your pets may find them too tempting to resist. In such a condition, be careful to offer the kids exactly the amount of chocolates which you find suitable and they could eat well.

Some dogs develop a unique ability of opening refrigerators at home and picking out substances which they find alluring. They are unaware of the fact that some of the items could hurt their body severely. If you too have such a dog in your house, be vigilant and lock your refrigerators to prevent any mishappening.

When you remain cautious of what your dog eats, it would certainly have a good effect on its body and mind and it would be supremely healthy and hearty for a considerable period.
