Housing and homelessness
Leaving home is one of the biggest changes in our lives. Moving into our own place is something that many of us look forward to. But for some, leaving home is a far less happy time.
Often people are forced into thinking about leaving home because of disagreement and falling out at home, domestic violence or a sudden loss of family income.
If you need somewhere to stay or are worried about your housing situation, there are organisations and services that can help.
There is also advice available if you have time to think about your options. There are advantages and disadvantages in all situations, so it's always best to consider your decision carefully.
Southwark's housing advice service should be your first point of contact. Their advisers will try to help prevent you becoming homeless in the first place.
Think! Before you leave home (PDF) is a guide for young people leaving home. It covers things to think about, types of housing, facts for under 18s, leaving home in an emergency, homelessness and financial support.
Centrepoint is a national youth homelessness charity for young people 16 or over. Phone 020 7287 9134.
